The Benefits of Pilates On The Body

Pilates is a fantastic exercise method which concentrates on your posture and muscles of the trunk which help posture, namely abdominal, shoulder, back and bottom muscles.
Pilates is suitable for a wide range of people from first time exercises all the way through to Olympic sports people. It can also be very good for people with back problems and is also an ideal regime for injury rehabilitation.
When controlling our posture better we not only use the muscle system more effectively - small and deep muscles which are supportive along with the more obvious ones which provide movements to joints - but also start to move ourselves correctly. For this reason Pilates can be helpful for looking after the spine, maximising strength around it and toning up the key areas listed above - which appeals to most of us. Not only that but moving correctly can limit tight muscles and uncomfortable, stiff joints.
Learning to use the deep abdominal muscles and perhaps changing postural habits can take a little time and practice but I think the results are worth it. There are lots of way to keep adding interest and challenges to your Pilates by using small pieces of equipment such as small balls, bands and foam rollers. In addition, to this simply by moving the arms and legs faster, or at different angles with more complex co-ordination can make the moves more challenging.
Pilates is largely floor based exercises devised by Joseph Pilates early in the last century. The approach to Pilates is slow and controlled which provides long term results as it helps to rebalance the body.
Classes are small typically around 12 people per a one hour session, which helps to ensure that the teacher can make sure that all participants are performing the exercises correctly and safely. The teacher can then provide correction of posture if needed. The small class numbers means that the class members can see all the exercises which the teacher demonstrates. For reasons of keeping Pilates safe and effective many teachers will ask to see all new members on a one on one basis for the first couple of sessions to go over the basics.
There can seem to be a lot to learn at the beginning, but Pilates can quickly help you to relax from a busy day and help you to feel energised. The longer you practise Pilates the more you will feel taller and toned as the weeks and months go by.
